The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, has successfully intervened to resolve the chieftaincy dispute within the Sunyani Traditional Council, paving the way for the restoration of peace, unity and renewed socio-economic development in the area.
The intervention followed lingering disagreements involving the Sunyani Traditional Council, the Paramount Queen Mother , Nana Akosua Dua Asor Sika Brayie II and the newly installed Paramount Chief, Odeefuor Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II. As part of efforts to bring lasting resolution to the matter, the Ministry invited all key parties to engage in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) processes, where a clear roadmap was agreed upon to restore harmony within the Traditional Council within a three-month period.
In line with this roadmap, a Unity Press Conference was held on Tuesday, 3rd February, 2026, during which the Acting President of the Sunyani Traditional Council , Nana Kwaku Sarbeng II announced the lifting the suspension earlier placed on the Paramount Queen Mother of the Sunyani Traditional Area. The Queen Mother, Nana Akosua Dua Sika Brayie II was formally accorded full acceptance and recognition, along with four other divisional queen mothers marking a significant milestone in the peace-building process.
The roadmap further stipulates that the currently installed Paramount Chief Odeefuor Ogyeamansan Boahen Korkor II shall be recognised as the sole Paramount Chief of Sunyani until the Judicial Committee completes its investigations and sittings to determine the rightful occupant of the stool. This interim arrangement is aimed at maintaining stability, preventing further tensions and allowing due process to take its course.
The coordinated efforts of the Sector Minister and the Bono Regional Minister have been widely commended, with residents expressing optimism that the restoration of peace will reposition Sunyani as a favourable destination for investment and development. Traditional leaders and community members have also expressed gratitude to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, and the Regional Minister for their decisive leadership in restoring unity to the once vibrant and influential Sunyani Royal Family.
The Ministry reiterated its commitment to resolving chieftaincy disputes through dialogue, mediation and established legal processes, stressing that peace within traditional areas remains critical to local governance, national cohesion and sustainable development.
